PM Anthony Albanese meeting with the Nadesalingam family |
The Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese met with the family of a Tamil asylum seeker who returned to central Queensland last week after more than four years in prison. Priya Nadaraja with her family thanked PM Albanese for allowing them to return to Biloela.
Nadesaligams still looking for a permanent residence permit. PM Albanese took his senior officials to regional Queensland this week and stopped at Gladstone today.
Priya Nadaraja, Nades, and their two Australian-born daughters, Kopika and Tharnicaa, live in Central Queensland under a bridging visa issued by the new Labor government. Anthony Gov. had assured them that a solution for permanent residence was on the way.
At his press conference, PM Albanese reiterated that the decision to allow the family to survive was with Andrew Giles, the Minister for Immigration.
“I have said before that I do not see any obstacle to the family settling in Australia, but that is a ministerial decision,” he said.
Addressing the crowd at a community meeting in Gladstone PM Albanese said:
“I went to Biloela in 2019,”
“I went there and saw for myself a community that was caring, a community that just wanted to take care of itself – including the two little girls I had the honor of meeting this morning.
“That’s the feeling you get in regional Australia – hold on to it, hold it dear, be proud of it.”
PM Anthony said he was proud to be able to lead a country that “expressed such warmth” at the decision of then-Interior Minister Jim Chalmers to allow them to return to Biloela.
Tharnicaa Nadesalingam received 5 days after returning home.
The Biloela community officially greeted the family over the weekend at the Flourish Festival, and Tharnicaa, five, celebrated his fifth birthday on Sunday, his first out of detention.
Priya Nadaraja said
“Thank you to the Prime Minister,” “I’m back in my community, I’ve made great friends. “My mind is relaxed.”
Kopika and Tharnicaa said they were excited about going to school next week.
