Tallahassee, Fla. — August 20, 2025

Governor Ron DeSantis today honored five legendary Floridians with the Governor’s Medal of Freedom, the state’s highest civilian award. The recipients—Jimmy Buffett, Bob Graham, Buddy MacKay, Lincoln Díaz-Balart, and John Thrasher—were recognized posthumously for their lifelong contributions to Florida’s culture, politics, and public service.

“I’m proud to recognize the legacies of these great Floridians,” Governor DeSantis said. “Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home. They have each earned the honor of being awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom.”

The award, created in 2020, celebrates individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions” to the state of Florida and its citizens.

Honorees and Their Legacies

  • Jimmy Buffett (1946–2023): Beloved singer-songwriter and entrepreneur, Buffett brought the island spirit to global audiences through hits like “Margaritaville.” He also built the Margaritaville brand, became a bestselling author, and championed environmental causes, particularly manatee conservation.

  • Lincoln Díaz-Balart (1954–2025): Cuban-American congressman who represented South Florida for nearly two decades. A fierce opponent of communism, Díaz-Balart authored key provisions of the Cuban Liberty Act of 1996 and co-founded the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute.

  • Bob Graham (1936–2024): Former U.S. Senator and Governor of Florida, Graham was known for his work on education, environmental protection, and national security. He co-chaired the congressional inquiry into the 9/11 attacks and founded the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida.

  • Buddy MacKay (1933–2024): Florida’s 42nd Governor, he also served as lieutenant governor, congressman, and diplomat. Appointed Special Envoy for the Americas by President Bill Clinton, MacKay worked on trade, security, and human rights across the region.

  • John Thrasher (1943–2025): A Vietnam veteran, Florida legislator, and Speaker of the House, Thrasher later became President of Florida State University. Under his leadership, FSU rose into the nation’s top 20 public universities and raised over $1 billion in fundraising.

About the Medal of Freedom

Established in 2020 (Section 14.35, Florida Statutes), the Governor’s Medal of Freedom has previously been awarded to Florida State University coaching legend Bobby Bowden (2021), former CIA officer Felix Rodríguez (2021), philanthropist Barbara Nicklaus (2022), and WWII prosecutor Benjamin Ferencz (2022).

Today’s ceremony further cements the Medal as a mark of enduring honor for those whose lives have left an indelible mark on Florida’s history.
