In a video released to social media, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) responded to Elon Musk buying Twitter.
'What Interesting News...': Marsha Blackburn Responds to Elon Musk Buying Twitter. Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said:
What interesting news, Elon Musk has reached the deal on Twitter. Now we want to make certain that twitter goes back to being what it was supposed to be the online public square where everyone has the opportunity to express their opinions and have those respected. You know this nation our freedoms have been well preserved because of robust respectful bipartisan debate. It’s time for Twitter to become what it was supposed to be: the online public space for everyone with different views.
The Twitter board has agreed to a $44bn (£34.5bn) takeover offer from the billionaire Elon Musk. Elon also called for a series of changes from relaxing its content restrictions to eradicating fake accounts.
Mr. Elon Musk is the world's richest person, according to Forbes, with an estimated net worth of $273.6bn mostly due to his shareholding in electric vehicle maker Tesla which he runs. He also leads the aerospace firm SpaceX.
"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," Elon Musk said in a statement announcing the deal from his official Twitter handle.
"I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spambots, and authenticating all humans," he added.
"Twitter has tremendous potential - I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it," Musk added in his Twitter statement.
Twitter faces growing pressure from global politicians and regulators over the content that appears on its platform. It has drawn critics from left and right over its efforts to mediate misinformation.
In one of its most high-profile moves, in January 2021 it banned 45th US President Donald J. Trump, perhaps its most powerful user, citing the risk of "incitement of violence". Trump in his Fox News interview said that he is not going to join Twitter again, even if Elon must reinstate his account having more than 80 million followers. Trump will continue his social media journey through his own social media site TRUTH Social.
